The Art of Fall Decor with The Margaret Cleveland

Our October meeting was one to remember and filled with color, creativity, and the cozy charm of the fall season.

Homeland Garden Club members gathered for an enchanting morning of creativity and inspiration led by Christopher Heller, the visionary behind The Margaret Cleveland at Walther Gardens and Nursery and a lifelong artist and gardener known for his soulful approach to design.

It was wonderful to be back after our first visit shortly after the gardens and nursery opened three years ago. The transformation of the property was awe-inspiring! Its cottage garden aesthetic is now resplendent throughout the space, from lush plants and artful pots to curated furnishings and home goods that reflect Christopher’s signature blend of charm and sophistication.

This month’s topic explored how to create exterior fall seasonal displays using unique containers filled with both annuals and perennials. Christopher emphasized layered textures, visual continuity, and thoughtful editing as key design principles for achieving balance and beauty. To elevate each arrangement, he incorporated natural and unexpected elements, such as cut dried hydrangeas, roses, grapevine coils, and even faux leaves, adding height, structure, and that unmistakable wow factor.

His thoughtful guidance reminded us that fall décor is more than just pumpkins and mums — it’s an opportunity to express the spirit of the season through creativity, authenticity, and joy.

Following his presentation, members enjoyed a private shopping experience and took in the garden center’s beauty and curated treasures. It was a delightful and inspiring morning, and a perfect celebration of creativity, community, and autumn’s charm.

It was a truly special experience to learn from a master gardener and artist who encourages us to break the norm, follow our instincts, and create from the heart.
